I started somewhat in the leave camp. In particular, very worried about social breakdown across the EU, not least because of, for example, youth unemployment and the inability of the EU to correct errors because of the way it is constitutionally constructed. I still embrace the globalist and open vision of many brexiters (Ryan Bourne, Alllister Heath, Andrew Lilico, Patrick Minford, JP Floru, Matt Ridley and many MPs that I know) which the EU rejects. At the back of my mind, however, was always the fact that the most serious problems afflicting the UK when it came to regulation were self inflicted (e.g. planning control) or inflicted by us on the EU (e.g. much financial services regulation, especially of insurance) so I had no real hope of things being much better here in practice if we left. However, I do think that the campaign that the leave camp have conducted, more or less focused on anti-free-market policies in relation to migration, protectionism, government spending and even labour market regulation (I am afraid Andrea Leadsom's attempt to justify keeping all the EU's labour market regulation should we leave was dreadful) has been sufficient to change the intellectual climate in such a way that, should we leave, Britain will end up more regulated (especially in relation to migration) and more socialist. So, I shall be voting "remain". it is a pity - if only the leave campaign had been run on the basis of optimism and openness I might have voted differently. Intrinsically, the tenor of the campaigns should not affect my vote. However, it is inconceivable that a campaign can be run on the basis of illiberalism and socialism and then, on exit, a government will be able to turn round and say: "right, now we are out, we will do the opposite". There were different coalitions that the leave campaign could have chosen to put together, but they have chosen the socialist/nationalist axis, which is not for me. They could have chosen to put together a liberal/internationalist coalition.
